Motio Cognos Migration
In this latest release, Cognos Analytics 11.1.7 provided a good mix of bug fixes, improvements, and new features.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that IBM continues to standardize its platforms by implementing additional Carbon Design practices, such as new icons and font and color updates.
In past or even recent releases, readability in visualizations has always been an area for improvement. As of this release, the categorical axis labels have been improved. The padding and angle have been changed to improve readability.
Another problem I encountered with visualizations in general was their scaling capabilities. With this release, you can now use logarithmic scales when the data you are displaying is much less or much more than the rest of the data when or when the percentage differences between the values are significant.
Ibm Cognos Analytics
As mentioned in recent releases, IBM is committed to making its tools look consistent. Although the Dashboarding and Reporting components of IBM Cognos are two separate offerings, you will continue to see future changes implemented consistently across both.
To start with reporting, I’d like to start with the ability to add a baseline to a visualization. Horizontal or vertical lines running across the chart to indicate major divisions of the data.
Also, just like panels, you have the same ability to use the improved categorical axis label, title, and logarithmic scale options.
Finally, I want to highlight the dataset improvements. The ability to use the query explorer when creating datasets is a huge improvement in my opinion. This allows greater flexibility in managing and modifying your queries. Additionally, you can reuse an existing report and its queries in the dataset.

You can also perform query operations with properties, manage advanced filters and parameters, review generated SQL, and validate and rename queries.
Whether you’ve built a great report or dashboard, it doesn’t make much sense if your audience doesn’t know about it.
Email capability allows a user to send an email when scheduling or sharing content. The four new additional features are listed below:

In this latest version, you can expect some great features to improve the overall user experience. Some of these improvements and changes include a new way to learn the system (Cognitive Learning Dashboard), making the Cognos user interface (including dashboards and reports) more consistent and easy to use, and improvements to its AI capabilities and of advanced analysis.
This is a fancy name for a help system. When it comes to finding out about the Cognos toolset or any kind of software tool, it can often be a painful process to find something you need or relevant quickly. As a result, IBM introduced this new help feature to improve the way we learn. And I quite like it.
Located in the top right as before, the new “Learn” panel now adapts your question to where you’re working and only finds answers that are relevant to you.

Whether you are searching or clicking the learn/help icon ‘?’ toolbar, the help system understands which feature you are currently using and will suggest any related content (for example, knowledge articles, YouTube videos, and IBM community content) based on a result.
For example, if you are using the dashboard UI and its views, the help system will return all relevant results based on the dashboard and views. Pretty cool huh?
We all know that the IBM family of products is not only made up of Cognos. Keeping IBM products (especially IBM Planning Analytics) consistent in look and feel is very evident in this release; IBM continues to apply the Carbon Design System to Cognos Analytics.
As a result, several icons and fonts have been changed. Personally, I think the changes give the Cognos UI a fresher look and consistency is the key point here.
Cognos Analytics Archives
In older versions of panels, it can sometimes be quite frustrating when the menus and panel layouts aren’t exactly consistent or easy to use. However, in this version, IBM has made some nice improvements to make the user experience much more welcoming.
You can now expand crosstab hierarchies to show nested children. This is very useful when dealing with dimensional data. Also applies to Planning Analytics, Power Cubes and Microsoft Cubes.
It’s now easier to navigate through views to make changes; you can add a column to each required field in the Fields Panel. Also, maximizing screen real estate for this feature was a nice touch.
Another clever feature is the display toolbar docking. The Toolbar for Views is now at the top of the Control Panel and is docked there by default. Although it can be detached, most users will probably want to dock it somewhere on the top for easy access.

Depending on what you select in the panel, the toolbar icons will be displayed accordingly. For example, if you click a table view in the panel, the toolbar appears with the icons you can use for tables. Again, this makes things easier than before.
Finally, you can have a custom label on your display. You can define a custom label on a measure. For example, if you have a bar chart that displays numbers, you can specify a label for the numbers, such as “pts” to indicate that the numbers represent points.
Focus mode has now changed for dashboard consumers (not just edit mode). Use zoom mode to maximize the size of a visualization to quickly review the content of the chart. It basically works as a “full screen” button for individual viewing.
For example, if you want to see a chart in a dashboard, expand the view to make it larger. It is very easy and useful.

As of this release, map views support categorical colors. It’s about giving the user more control.
There weren’t many changes to report in this release. However, a new data container type “DataTable” was introduced in this release.
It is like a list object (showing rows/columns) but allows interactivity as well as the ability to expand/collapse and apply filtering functions to columns.
Unlike lists, data is displayed on the browser side, so data in data tables is displayed very quickly. This is a very useful feature to have.

Just like the previous version of Cognos Analytics 11.1.4, you can expect some key improvements and new features in this latest version.

Show Members in a Data Tree – Expands hierarchies to show members in the data tree. In the Selected Sources panel, members are organized into a data tree structure, with parent and child members.
Browse from Dashboard to Dashboard – Dashboard to Dashboard Browse definitions. The values you select to explore are passed as global filters to the target dashboard.
